Investing in the next generation Major infrastructure expansion projects have begun in order to meet growing global demand . Recently , Bayport received three new electric ship-to-shore ( STS ) cranes to support
Wharf 6 and Wharf 2 , bringing the terminal ’ s total STS crane count to 18 . The cranes enhance operational capacity and are equipped with complete electric motors , gears and control systems , thus emitting zero diesel emissions and aligning with the port ’ s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 .

Alongside the crane expansion , yard space is being added and berthing facilities are being improved . Construction of Wharf 7 at Bayport is underway , with completion expected in early 2026 , followed by the development of Wharf 1 beginning in late Q1 2026 .
At Barbours Cut , upgrades to wharves , container yards and container-handling equipment are enhancing capacity and optimizing turn times . The port also plans to redevelop its general cargo and breakbulk docks to modernize those facilities . In fact , Port Houston is set to invest $ 1.7 billion in its landside infrastructure through 2028 , further securing its position as a premier global trade hub .
Paving the way for larger ships
One of the most critical infrastructure efforts is the Houston Ship Channel Expansion , also known as Project 11 . This $ 1.2 billion project will deepen some upstream channel segments to 46.5 feet and widen the channel from 530 feet to 700 feet , allowing larger ships to access the terminals while improving navigational safety .
