PHILADELPHIA TRADE AND LOGISTICS the ship, onto a truck and out the gate as soon as possible,” said Christian Holt.
The port’ s efforts to bolster capabilities will allow Philadelphia to continue to be a critical hub in the perishables network, noted SeaCube’ s Sappio.
“ The investments being made at the Port of Philadelphia in facilities specifically designed for handling perishables— including cold storage, repack facilities and dedicated inspection centers— will help facilitate the safe and efficient transport of foodstuffs now and into the future,” he said.
Drayage Truck Registry. The registry allows the terminal to track trucks moving within the port and intermodal facilities.
PreGate also provides change notifications in real time, including changes in ship scheduling and cargo availability, according to Advent eModal. Six months into the launch, the
results have proven out, Eric Holt noted.
“ We have the right number of labor allocated, the sorting of the yard. Our truck turn times have really gone down,” he said.“ The proof is that the more communication and information a terminal can have, the better they can serve.”
Sustainable, smart solutions
The use of technology and a push toward more sustainable operations to maximize efficiency are visible throughout the industry, and investments in those spaces are evident in the Philadelphia region.
PhilaPort has emphasized its environmental commitment to lower emissions across terminals in its strategic plan, Destination 2040. In October, the port announced that it plans to use the $ 79.7 million secured through the US Environmental Protection Agency’ s Clean Ports Program to put in electric ship-toshore cranes, forklifts, yard tractors and charging infrastructure, as well as a new electric rail switcher to replace the diesel version.
Holt Logistics’ s client company, Greenwich Terminals LLC, is committed to greening and modernizing its operations. This includes electrifying cranes and adding yard equipment supported by RFID and GPS technology. Additionally, Greenwich Terminals is currently testing electric trucks in its facilities for the first time.
“ Assuming [ the trucks ] pencil out and work, we’ ll be transitioning that over the next few years,” said Eric Holt.
Four post-Panamax cranes have been retrofitted from diesel to electric in the past year, two of which are expected to be in service in the next couple of months, noted Christian Holt.
“ We went forward with that and made an investment on our part, on the family’ s part, in becoming more sustainable and lowering our carbon footprint,” he said. Last year, Holt Logistics launched Advent eModal’ s PreGate application at the Packer Avenue Marine Terminal. The application, which gives truck drivers and shippers the ability to make appointments in advance, complements the terminal’ s
