Large US truckload carriers have shrunk their fleets to fresh lows to match still-soft freight demand and boost weakening profit margins. The Journal of Commerce Truckload Capacity Index dropped 3.6 percentage points sequentially and 4.2 points year over year to 72.4 % during the third quarter, an all-time low for the index, which runs back to the 2008 – 09 Great Recession. As the industry tries to shake off a threeyear demand slump, carriers expect more capacity to exit the overall trucking market due to stricter regulatory enforcement.

Weekly spot truckload rates per mile excluding fuel surcharges. The DAT Freight and Analytics average US truckload spot rate was $ 1.67 per mile in the week of Nov. 8, 2025, flat from the previous week but up from $ 1.64 per mile in the same week last year.

Xeneta Asia to US West Coast short and long-term rates
Xeneta aggregates freight rates for both short-term contracts valid for less than 32 days, and long-term contracts valid for 87 days or more. Terminal Handling Charges( THCs) are excluded. The Nov. 13, 2025, average spot rate from Asia to US West Coast was $ 1,892 per FEU, down 11.7 % from the previous week. Pricing in long-term contracts signed in the last three months ticked up 0.1 % to $ 1,533 per FEU, while overall long-term contract rates were unchanged at $ 1,607 per FEU.
