Upgrades are being made to cargohandling equipment along with additional container capacity .
SC Ports / English Purcell customers will also benefit from onterminal rail service offered by Palmetto Railways . The service provides dual connectivity to the CSX and Norfolk Southern railroads , as well as proximity to Interstate 526 .
In addition to the extra capacity , plans are underway for the terminal to achieve a 52-foot depth , matching that of Charleston Harbor . The South Carolina Department of Transportation is playing a vital role in
this project , with plans to replace the Don Holt Bridge on I-526 . This will remove height constraints and enable the largest container ships calling the US East Coast to access the terminal .
With the reopening of the Hugh K . Leatherman Terminal after an agreement was reached between SC Ports and the International Longshoremen ’ s Association , as well as the modernization of the Wando Welch and North Charleston terminals ,
SC Ports sits ready to unlock 10 million TEUs of capacity in Charleston Harbor .
