Port congestion in China in the aftermath of a string of typhoons in July and August pulled ocean schedule reliability on the Asia – Europe trade to fresh lows in September. On-time performance for vessels calling North Europe slipped to 5 % in September from 6 % in August, which was already the lowest since the COVID-19 pandemic, according to data from Xeneta subsidiary eeSea. Analysts and container lines warn that storm-disrupted ports in Asia will struggle to claw out of the congestion before the end of the year.

Xeneta Asia to US West Coast short and long-term rates
Xeneta aggregates freight rates for both short-term contracts valid for less than 32 days, and long-term contracts valid for 87 days or more. Terminal handling charges are excluded. The Oct. 17, 2026, average spot rate from Asia to the US West Coast was $ 7,730 per FEU, up 0.6 % from the previous week. Pricing in long-term contracts signed in the last three months increased 7.1 % to $ 3,815 per FEU, while overall long-term contract rates declined 1.4 % to $ 2,270 per FEU.
