CEVA targets $ 1 billion annual‘ value’ as focus shifts to organic growth
By Greg Knowler
CEVA Logistics is shifting from an acquisition-led expansion to a focus on extracting greater value from its enlarged network, targeting $ 1 billion in additional annual value by the end of 2029, according to CEO Patrick Moebel.
The target will be pursued through a new operating model designed to simplify decision-making, move accountability closer to customers and regions, improve productivity, and support organic growth, Moebel said in an Oct. 6 interview with Journal of Commerce. The additional value will come via higher revenue derived through higher-value contracts and from cost efficiencies.
“ Our view is three years out, but the model will start operating right away,” he said.“ We will see results for customer journeys as well as growth and employee engagement, which will be visible very quickly in the next few months. We want to generate $ 1 billion in additional annual value for the group in three years.”
“ Our view is three years out, but the model will start operating right away.”
Moebel’ s comments come just days after CEVA parent CMA CGM closed its $ 1.4 billion acquisition of FedEx Supply Chain, giving CEVA a substantially larger contract logistics platform in North America.
CEVA in early October appointed Henri Le Gouis to lead its Freight Management division and Chris Walton to lead Contract Logistics, the two core global business units that encompass all CEVA activities.
Regional leaders have also been appointed and tasked with improving CEVA’ s margins that have been diluted as CMA CGM massively expanded its global logistics footprint. Although logistics revenue rose 6.6 % year over year in the first quarter, operating profit slumped 17.2 %.
The regional leaders will be Scott Temple for the Americas, Paul Bernard for North-Central Europe, Eric Dessupoiu for South Europe( including France), Olivier Boccara for Asia-Pacific, and Paras Rawal for India, the Middle East and Africa.
‘ From scale to optimizing’
Since its acquisition by CMA CGM Group in 2019, CEVA has expanded its size, capabilities and global reach, integrating large logistics players. Takeovers of Ingram
Micro’ s CLS division, GEFCO and Bolloré Logistics preceded the FedEx Supply Chain deal. CEVA has also made several domestic bolt-on acquisitions and launched joint ventures to accelerate its growth in key geographies and market sectors.
“ We are not excluding additional M & As, but what we, for sure, are looking to do is optimize what we have done so far, finish our integrations, set up a platform where we can grow organically, and that’ s what our focus is going forward,” Moebel said.
He noted CEVA’ s primary focus over the last five years has been on building scale rather than achieving industry-conforming returns.
“ Now we are going from scale to optimizing the environment we are managing and providing the services and the breadth of regional presence to all of our customers,” Moebel said.
The immediate challenge for CEVA is the integration of FedEx Supply Chain into its North America contract logistics operations. That task will fall to Temple, the former president of FedEx Supply Chain.
CMA CGM closed the acquisition at the end of September, adding significant scale to its North America contract
