Containerized exports from the US expanded for the second straight year in 2024 after snapping a three-year skid in 2023. Total containerized US exports grew 0.9 % last year following a 0.3 % uptick the previous year, according to PIERS, a sister product of the Journal of Commerce within S & P Global. Outbound volumes of agricultural goods bounced back from a rough 2023, but even a 6.2 % increase left them just shy of 2022 levels. Exports of paper and forest products grew 5.3 %, arresting a long-term slide that has seen them decline more than 30 % since 2019, while shipments of chemicals and resins rose 1.2 %, a third consecutive annual increase and a second straight year of record volumes. Recyclable product exports tumbled 5.5 % last year after bucking a long-term decline in 2023. Mineral products was the largest export commodity group in 2024, accounting for 15.1 % of total US exports, followed by wood pulp, paper and paperboard( 13.9 %), vegetable products( 11.5 %), foodstuffs( 9.5 %), and vehicles, aircraft and other vessels( 9.3 %).
