With the firm support of the crown of England, William Penn granted Philadelphia its city charter in 1701, establishing it as a formal center for maritime commerce. For over three centuries, the Philadelphia region has thrived as a place where trade, innovation and industry have met to build and bolster the economy.
The city continues to make its mark in many ways. According to the US Census Bureau, Philadelphia consistently ranks as the secondlargest city on the US East Coast. It is also considered a“ super region,” with over 58 million people living within a 200-mile radius, according to population data from a 2023 American Community Survey. Additionally, the Bureau of Economic Analysis and regional economic reports noted a Gross Metropolitan Product of close to $ 600 billion in 2024 – 25.
