The top five sourcing origins for automobile-related parts and components are China , South Korea , Japan , Germany and Taiwan , according to PIERS . The Los Angeles – Long Beach port complex is the busiest US gateway for containerized auto parts and components , handling 31.8 % of imports last year , followed by Savannah – Brunswick ( 13.9 %), Charleston ( 11.3 %), New York and New Jersey ( 11.2 %), and Virginia ( 5.8 %).

While importers of finished automobiles are escaping the worst effects of recent supply chain snags , importers of containerized auto parts and components will continue to grapple with the same issues at ports and inland rail ramps that have affected their operations for years , Hughes said .
Those issues , including carrier charges for detention and demurrage at marine terminals and rail heads and unexpected changes to earliest return dates for moving containers to those locations , have added cost and uncertainties to the supply chains of beneficial cargo owners ( BCOs ) in many industries ,
Hughes said .
“ In general , we experience the exact same issues that most BCOs face ,” he said .
