Total containerized exports from the United States ticked up 0.3 % in 2023 following three consecutive annual declines , with volumes rising 0.3 % in the first half and 0.2 % in the second half , according to PIERS , a sister product of the Journal of Commerce within S & P Global . Outbound volumes of chemicals and plastic resins rose 5.7 %, a second straight year-over-year increase , while shipments of recyclables snapped a three-year slump with a 6.9 % increase . Exports of automobiles and parts , paper and forest products , and agricultural goods slipped 3.5 %, 8.8 % and 6.1 %, respectively , from 2022 . Mineral products was the largest export commodity group last year , accounting for 15.1 % of total US exports , followed by wood pulp , paper and paperboard ( 15.1 %), vegetable products ( 10.6 %), foodstuffs ( 9.1 %), and base metals ( 8.1 %).
