Total containerized imports to the United States fell 12.9 % year over year in 2023 , with a 22.2 % drop in first-half volumes slowing to a 2.6 % decline in the second half , according to PIERS , a sister product of the Journal of Commerce within S & P Global . The decrease in volumes broke a three-year streak of annual import growth , but the decline was neither universal nor uniform across the various commodity groups tracked by PIERS . Inbound volumes of automobiles and parts ( up 2.1 %), household goods ( up 2.5 %), and electronics ( up 3 %), for example , grew from 2022 levels , while shipments of alcoholic beverages ( down 3.6 %), toys and games ( down 0.8 %), and apparel and footwear ( 1.7 %) all registered declines . Miscellaneous manufactured articles , a category that includes a wide variety of goods ranging from pencils , pens and other art materials to brooms and brushes , was the largest import commodity group last year , accounting for 17.1 % of total US imports , followed by machinery and mechanical products ( 14.9 %), mineral products ( 11.3 %), textiles and textile products ( 8.2 %), and base metals ( 7.2 %)
