L the lessons learned over several decades of port rail operations and intensive performance evaluation. The SPB gateway incorporates several intermodal components: the on-dock rail yards, support rail yards and the rail network connecting those yards, which are the focus of a continuous rail enhancement program; the investments by Union Pacific and BNSF Railway on their transcontinental railroads; and the development of new multimodal logistics centers serving as western distribution hubs, including BNSF’ s Barstow International Gateway and other projects in California, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Texas.
