Yeninas leaves 50-year legacy
Barbara Spector Yeninas , a pioneer in maritime media and marketing and a Port of Newark stalwart , died May 31 at the age of 84 , leaving a 50-year legacy in the male-dominated container shipping industry . She discovered her love of communications while working for the student newspaper at New York University , where she wrote an acerbic column titled , “ Barb Wire .” Upon graduating , she got her feet wet at the Asbury Park Press , and then Newark Evening News . Seizing on the importance of Newark ’ s container shipping sector , she became the Evening News ’ first maritime editor , where she quickly gained a reputation and respect within the shipping industry . Yeninas went on in 1974 to launch Barbara Spector Yeninas Associates ( BSYA ), arguably the best-known US-based maritime communications agency with clients including Pacific Australia Container
Express Line , Evergreen Marine , the Port of Hamburg , the now-defunct Horizon Lines , Global Terminals , INTTRA , and Maher Terminals .“ As much as Barbara was a powerhouse and trailblazer , she was , first and foremost , a generous , warm and kind friend ,” BSYA President and friend Lisa Aurichio told the Journal of Commerce .“ She could be Barbara Spector Yeninas counted on to contribute her unmatched intellect and sassy sense of humor to every conversation .” For nearly 50 years , Yeninas organized the United Seamen Service ’ s Admiral of the Ocean Sea Awards , a blacktie affair highlighting the industry ’ s leaders . She served for 35 years as the executive director of the Containerization & Intermodal Institute ( CII ), and another 18 years as the head of the New York / New Jersey Foreign Freight Forwarders & Brokers Association . In December 2008 , CII awarded her its Lifetime Achievement Award . Stanford Erickson , a former editor and publisher of the Journal of Commerce , remembers her as a “ brilliant ” writer and marketer who first suggested the magazine ’ s annual Maritime Outlook , now known as the Annual Review and Outlook . Born March 21 , 1940 , in the Bronx , New York , she is preceded in death by her husband , Joseph Yeninas , an editorial cartoonist and art director at the Newark Evening News , who in 1987 become the art director at the Journal of Commerce , a role he held for more than a decade . Yeninas , an avid cook , world traveler , and collector of antique posters and art , leaves two children , Joanna Saltz and Laura Newby , their respective husbands , Scott and Andy , and seven grandchildren .
