Intermodal Service Scorecard : Spring 2024 September | 5
CHART 1D
Worst-performing railroad ( s ): The other three Class I railroads traded the bottom spot depending on the question . When asked to name the worst railroad , NS received a plurality of the vote with 29.4 %. In the KPIs , NS received a score of 3.77 out of 5 points — better than CPKC at 3.18 and CN at 3.17 . In the average net promoter score , NS scored 7.67 out of 10 , ahead of CN at 6.75 and CPKC at 5.65 . In general , the Canadian railroads scored lower than the US railroads , with several IMCs believing CPKC has taken its “ eye off the ball ” by focusing too much on Mexico and not enough on Canada .
Modal shift : There was a split between how shippers voted and how IMCs voted . Most shippers said they have converted more freight to rail in 2024 ; however , only 26.8 % of IMCs agreed with that sentiment , while 46.4 % said their customers put more freight on the highways . The explanation is related to the different mix of lanes for each customer . Loads traveling more than 1,500 miles across the US , particularly from Los Angeles to inland US hubs , have delivered significant cost savings to shippers . Freight moving within the US East or West coasts , however , doesn ’ t save much money for the average intermodal shipper .
