play an important role in keeping this key cross-border supply chain moving. While tariffs introduce new challenges for companies on both sides of the border, Staroba noted there are opportunities for carriers to help reduce this friction for shippers via seamless planning, consolidation and disciplined processes.
“ We work directly with customers and their brokers, leveraging our four decades of cross-border expertise, and can assist with consolidations for northbound shipments to reduce fees and accelerate delivery timelines,” Staroba said.“ With 300 service centers across North America, including 12 owned-and-operated facilities in Canada, and nine border-crossing points, we’ re also able to help our customers adapt quickly as their sourcing or supply chain strategies evolve.”
According to Gascon, businesses are seeking not only capacity but also the tenacity to mitigate logistical vulnerabilities, which the Port of Montreal aims to achieve through careful planning, multifarious logistics and a network of reliable partners.
“ Resilience also means collaborating with other ports and partners,” Gascon said.“ On the intermodal level, we mitigate risks by being connected to Canada’ s two national rail networks.”
XPO continues to support customers through continued investment across their Canadian network, fleet and team. This includes a new service center in Québec City and expanded door capacity at their Toronto service center— XPO’ s largest facility in Canada and a critical gateway into the country.
“ These enhancements allow us to handle more freight and traffic, giving customers greater flexibility and a smoother shipping experience,” Staroba said.
In addition to capacity, the Port of Montreal continues to invest in its existing infrastructure. This includes Vickers Overpass to improve traffic flow; an additional 6 km of rail to increase rail capacity by 20 %; and ongoing investments in the maintenance and upgrading of equipment.
“ Strengthening ports means strengthening Canada’ s economic sovereignty,” Gascon said.“ These are strategic investments to ensure the country remains in control of its flows, even in times of uncertainty.”
Xotta predicts a positive economic outlook for the Port of Vancouver, even as Canada navigates uncharted waters.“ Canada has a great story, and it manifests itself through this gateway in many cases,” he said.“ We take no credit for this; we’ re here to enable it. It’ s not the case in every port that they’ re very optimistic about growth in the future; here, we are. We’ re preparing for growth because we think it’ s coming. Current geopolitics are going to put a focus on accelerating that, and this gateway is seized with meeting that moment.” n
