UWL and companies active in the gateway area are working to address these concerns . The International Maritime Organization ’ s updated decarbonization goals aim for 30 % reduction of greenhouse gas ( GHG ) emissions by 2030 .
“ Sustainability conversations have drastically increased over the past 12 months ,” Krawczyk said . “ While a select few importers are drastically ahead of the curve , most companies are in the very early stages of building their sustainability programs . We ’ ll see more tangible traction nationwide in 2025 .”
UWL is working with an anchor customer to promote biofuels on the Sun Chief service during the current contract season . “ If we can accomplish that , it would mean a minimum of an 18 % pervoyage reduction of carbon emissions ,” Krawczyk added .
Over the past 12 years , NWSA voluntarily collaborated with three other port authorities in the Pacific Northwest to reduce air and climate pollution from seaport activities . Their efforts have led to significant reductions , with diesel particulate matter down by over 80 % and GHG emissions decreased over 15 % compared with 2005 .
NWSA is committed to achieving zero air and climate pollution at its gateway by 2050 . This includes installing shore power capability at all major container terminals by 2030 , transitioning to cleaner cargohandling equipment and phasing out
