While agriculture exports within Washington travel via truck to port terminals , rail is a significant mode of transportation to bring inland exports to Seattle and Tacoma harbors . To increase containerized US ag exports , NWSA ’ s Inland Rail Hub Strategic Initiative supports international intermodal services from non-traditional inland rail ramp locations . As part of this initiative , NWSA in February welcomed the first intermodal rail connection to the Puget Sound gateway with Tri Cities Intermodal . The first loaded train , carrying containerized hay bound for China , arrived at Tacoma ’ s Pierce County Terminal on Feb . 8 and set sail on Feb . 13 .
This initiative also creates opportunities for import intermodal service to these locations while reducing truck traffic and the environmental impacts of diesel particulate matter near the harbors . NWSA is a facilitator and partners with local stakeholders and agencies to navigate unique requirements and processes for each location , including Minot , ND ; Millersburg , Ore .; and sites in Washington , securing support and initiating projects .
